Eastern Shore

Across the 17.5 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, The Eastern Shore stretches 70 miles and is situated between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Being on or near the water is a huge perk of life on “The Shore.” Shop at a roadside stand, and learn how to crab from a pier, find adventure in kayaking, or dig for clams and oysters.

Looking for more land for your buck? For the price of one small home in a larger Hampton Roads city, you could have a large home and land on the Eastern Shore. Cape Charles, Onancock, and Chincoteague are the hubs of entertainment and family fun, but if you cruise the back roads and don’t mind a laid-back way of life, you can find amazing property deals.

In Cape Charles, residents enjoy the beach, cultural happenings, excellent restaurants and are only a few miles from nature preserves. Recognized as one of "America's Coolest Small Towns" by Budget Travel in 2009, Onancock is indeed a place where good coffee and art galleries reign. Perhaps check out Accomac, the village that has more restored colonial architecture than anywhere in the US, except for Colonial Williamsburg.

Oysters are beloved here. In the town of Exmore, you can attend The Little League Oyster Roast in March which includes music and a silent auction. Chatham Vineyards, located on a working farm that has been in use for four centuries, hosts a November oyster extravaganza with raw bar tasting, steamed clams, roasted oysters, and Eastern Shore-style clam chowder. The Oyster Farm at King’s Creek is a popular restaurant, marina, and gorgeous wedding venue and each October, residents and tourists attend the Chincoteague Oyster Festival.

One of the most beloved sites on the Eastern Shore is the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, where the annual Pony Swim and Auction occurs. The event was made famous by Marguerite Henry's book "Misty of Chincoteague". Can’t get enough ponies? On Assateague Island, you can go in search of the famous ponies on foot, by bike or bus tour. No visit is complete without a trek up the 1867 Assateague Lighthouse.

In the mood for somewhere extremely reclusive? Hop aboard a ferry for a cruise to Tangier Island. This small island situated in the Chesapeake Bay is a quiet family getaway. Listen for the unique old-world accents (Notice a hint of an Elizabethan accent) spoken by Tangier Island residents. Bikes and golf carts are the primary modes of transportation here.

When living on this peninsula, there are a few must-do activities and must-see places. Watch a rocket launch at NASA’s Wallops Island. Trip Advisor says that the #1 thing to do in Parksley is visit the Eastern Shore Railway Museum. “This Museum is just a gem of a place to visit.”

As you can guess, this region is dominated by agriculture and aquaculture. For foodies, that translates into a plethora of seafood and wine. Woody’s Beach BBQ on Chincoteague Island has fun activities for kids, including corn hole and a challenging ring toss game. Built by Silk City Diners Co., the vintage Exmore Diner has been a Landmark for over 50 years offering a friendly atmosphere with prompt service, home-style cooking, and old-fashioned prices. Seaside towns are incomplete without a quaint ice cream shop. Visit Island Creamery, in Chincoteague. The Conklin family has operated the shop since 1975, using fresh cream from local cows. Make time to visit Wachapreague to enjoy a fantastic on-the-water view and enjoy food that has been featured on the Food Network at The Island House.

Looking for work in the area? Agriculture, medical, education, and aeronautics are some of the industries here. Large employers include poultry giants Perdue & Tyson as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Caring for the aging is an important industry to the shore. Accomack County School System, Eastern Shore Community College, Town of Chincoteague, and the County of Accomack employ many of the local residents. Do you prefer a career in science and technology? There is plenty of work on The Shore in this field because The National Aeronautics & Space Admin, Marconi Technology, Department of Defense, and Northrop Grumman Corporation are located here.

Whether it is the great waterfront views or the quaint small town feel that inspires you to live on The Eastern Shore of Virginia, we hope that you will soon call this region “home”. We are excited to help you find your next home here!
