Reasons To Make Time For Family Dinner

“The fondest memories are made gathered around the table.” Unknown

The fact is, Americans hardly ever eat family dinner together anymore. Here are some sobering statistics from The, on “The Importance Of Eating Together:”

  • The average American eats one in every 5 meals in their car.
  • One in four Americans eat at least on fast food meal a day!
  • Majority of American families report eating a single meal together less than five days a week!

Importance for Children

  • According to Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), data shows students who do not eat regularly with their parents are more likely to be truant at school.
  • Statistically, children who did not eat with their parents at least twice a week were 40% more likely to be overweight.
  • Children will get more accustomed to trying new foods and eating their veggies.

Why Is Eating Together Better?

Since we tend to eat out when we’re in a rush, Americans typically resort to fast food which tends to have higher calories, sodium, etc. We choose food that is easy to eat on the move or that doesn’t take long to eat, which in most cases isn’t the healthiest. Also, eating alone can be alienating. When we come together as a family or as a community it’s a time to destress and talk about how our day went.

When we make our own meals we have more power over portion control, what foods we eat and are more likely to eat healthier!
