Newport News, on the north side of the Chesapeake Bay, combines rich history with diverse neighborhoods, a nice mix of housing density, and plenty of attractions, restaurants, and events. The city’s identity is closely tied to shipbuilding, the military, and aerospace - anchored by predominant employers like Newport News Shipbuilding, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and NASA’s Langley Research Center.
Newport News is the fifth most populous city in Virginia with over 181,000 residents and the fourth largest in terms of size, with its narrow shape — 3 miles wide and 23 miles long — encompassing 69 square miles. Located at the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula along the northern shore of the James River, Newport News is home to a large boating industry. Dozens of distinct neighborhoods dot the area, with notable locales including City Center, Denbigh, Hilton Village (known for its historic homes and quaint shops), and Kiln Creek. Christopher Newport University, which ranked #4 among public regional universities in the south, provides vitality and energy to the City Center area. Between these areas, the city maintains an impressive 32 city parks, the largest of which is 8,065 acres — making it the second largest park in the United States. Park services range from traditional camping and fishing to activities like archery and disc golf. And many Newport News residents volunteer with a wide array of philanthropies headquartered in the city, including Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg and many others. Ferguson Center for the Arts and the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center both offer a broad range of performances, while the Peninsula Fine Arts Center is the place to find exhibitions, classes, and camps for all ages. The area hosts a number of historical reenactments throughout the year, and science and history buffs enjoy frequenting the Mariners’ Museum, the Virginia Living Museum, and the Virginia War Museum. Fun festivals fill the calendar in this fun-loving city. The Newport News Fall Festival is in its fifth decade and newer events like the One City Marathon have been instant hits. And, of course, many people love how Newport News is conveniently nestled between the beaches of Virginia Beach, the metro bustle of Norfolk, and the historic charm of Williamsburg. Yelp lists nearly 600 restaurants in Newport News and the Newport News Hospitality Association is a good place to start when looking for a great meal. Notable eateries span the gastronomical spectrum in style and regional influence. The Avocado toast set raves about First Watch for breakfast with a Kale Tonic, and the burger crowd chows down at Viking Burger. Tastebuds with a taste for travel make the rounds to Mr. Gyros for Greek, Chic N Fish for Korean, and Aago for Indian/Himalayan/Nepalese. Newport News Shipbuilding was originally commissioned to build ships for coal transportation. However, in WWII, the company pivoted to dominate warship construction, which remains its major focus today, as one of the largest drivers of employment and economy to the region. Whether it is the history and waterfront lifestyle, great food and fun festivals, or the next step in your career that has you exploring Newport News, we hope that you will soon call this region “home”. We are excited to help you find your next home here! Sourced from: Read More
